What is KS Method?
1. Nihongo Learning Method for Filipinos
KS Method is a method of learning Japanese language which is developed and disseminated
in the Philippines. Moreover, KS Method is the learning method specifically-designed
for English speakers. Currently, Filipinos are the only people in the world
benefiting from the advantages of the KS Method. Over 1,200 Filipinos have
already learned Japanese language through the KS Method.
The first key that the KS Method gives advantage to Filipinos is the use of a mediation
language for learning, which is English. Filipinos can easily understand
the teacher’s instructions very well even with little prior knowledge to
its grammatical framework.
The second key is the alphabet. Contrary to traditional Nihongo classes, KS Method does
not teach the Japanese writing system from the very beginning; hiragana
and katakana are taught later. Also, in other Nihongo schools, textbooks
are written in Japanese, making it quite intimidating for first time learners.
Here at KS Method, textbooks are written in Romanized letters. That way,
students won’t feel stress and pressure while they’re learning, since the
Romanized alphabet never makes resistance in their brain to be absorbed.
The third key is English vocabulary. KS Method accepts English vocabulary for speaking
Japanese. Students can use any English word for constructing Japanese sentences,
thus eliminating the need to build up a vast number of Japanese vocabularies
from the beginning. Every English noun, adjective, and verb is available
for speaking Japanese in the KS Method. Students can take off vertically
like a helicopter on their basic study. This key provides an incredible
short cut on their learning.
2. Method with Basic Concept
KS Method is developed from a basic concept and is reflected in the name
itself. “K” is the initial of the developer’s name and “S” stands for “Saving”.
The target of “Saving” is time, money, and energy. Ultimately, KS Method
provides an efficient way of learning Nihongo rapid, affordable, and easy.
Characteristics of KS Method
1. Ultra Rapid Learning
Each unit of learning totals up to 60 hours in KS Method. Everybody can
speak in any way endlessly after 60 hours. The first 60 hours is the Basic
Course that trains students’ output, allowing them to say what they wish.
KS Method provides basic conversational training in this first 60 hours.
Furthermore, KS Method also provides a Professional course with 5 unit
course per 300 hours to complete.
2. Hiragana, Katakana unnecessary
KS Method does not require memory of the Japanese writing system, particularly
hiragana and katakana. Teaching the complex writing system from the very
start can affect the grammatical understanding and comprehension. In other
learning systems, the ability to generate expressions and sentences is
limited by vocabulary they have absorbed. Because of this, every foreign
learner must learn Nihongo step-by-step, slowly in other Nihongo schools.
3. Absorb grammar from the ears
Since the basic textbook is written in English, students can focus learning
new expressions and vocabulary by hearing them. KS Method emphasizes acquiring
linguistic information through auditory senses. Since it important to hear
the sounds of the language than seeing them, learning can be much faster
and easier. KS Method believes that language must be absorbed from the
ears before output is produced in the mouth, and not from eyes to mouth.
Traditional Japanese fall short of this, preferring to teach English visually.
This is the reason why Japanese can’t speak English well. In the same regard,
Filipinos can commit the same mistake if they start learning Nihongo from
memory build-up of hiragana, katakana, and kanji.
4. Speak Japanese with English
It usually takes a long time to store and memorize a lot of Japanese words
and phrases. For this reason, students can’t improve their speaking at
once. KS Method takes on a revolutionary idea to tackle this challenge:
USE ENGLISH! There are a variety of English words and phrases that are
used in the modern Japanese vernacular.
5. Use PC for Kanji Power
KS Method solves the biggest obstacle and disadvantage to most students,
and that is the daunting task of learning kanji. With the aid of a PC,
kanji memory is then facilitated. The traditional handwriting training
is considered to be old-fashioned. With the new age of computers, engineers
can easily write professional reports in Japanese.
Background of KS Method
1. Developer
Prof. Etsuro Kawamura, Japanese national, started teaching Japanese language
at the University of Santo Tomas in 1999. He developed the KS Method while
teaching at the Graduate School. He set up his first company “Tokyo Top
Language Center, Inc.” to serve private sectors. In 2003, he established
“KS Method Dissemination Foundation, Inc.” The Foundation was registered
in TESDA as a language training center in 2005. He has educated over 1,200
Filipino engineers and other professionals through the KS Method.
